National Donut Day is on the first Friday of June each year, succeeding the Donut Day event created by the Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.

Today is National Donut Day, and customers can get a free donut of any variety at Krispy Kreme restaurants, no purchase is necessary.

Dunkin’ Donuts is also offering a free donut with the purchase of a beverage in celebration of the holiday.
